Day 7: Self Portrait with Words

Today’s prompt is an exercise in the abstract. Create a self portrait using words. Before you start feeling too vulnerable, it’s a journaling exercise that we’re going to paint over. One of my favorite ways to art journal when I’ve got some intense feelings and emotions to go through is to write down my feelings with the knowledge that they’ll be covered by layers of paint, pen and lines. In fact a good friend of ours, Kaira Boston, holds workshops with a very specific process that you might be interested in. Her website is Studio Kaira and she leads amazing workshops called Creative Layers to Mindfulness. We use so many…

Day 9: Where I Call Home

What state do you call home? Do you remember the symbols from your school days; state bird, state flag, state flower? Is your state famous for something? Is there a rivalry with another state? How do people feel about it? Many of the prompts I create for my work come from inspiration while shopping and poking around all kinds of stores. I don’t often buy anything, but I like to search for that perfect treasure for someone. Today’s prompt came when I discovered a bag of pre-cut US state shapes in a craft store. They were tiny, less than an inch long for the average state. They made me think…

Day 2: Polka Dots – Inspired by Yayoi Kusama

“Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity” Yayoi Kusama I’ve been dreaming of seeing the Infinity Mirrors Exhibit for over a year and this month I was able to see Kusama’s work at the High Museum in Atlanta. It was a visual feast of polka dots! And as my artist friends have said, “Lynne, you certainly like your circles.” Circles are important to me. They have so much symbolism throughout history and throughout our lives. Circles of women, family circles, calling circles in emergencies, circles gathered to celebrate and to mourn. Infinity Mirrors did not disappoint.…

    10DCAC Day 10!!

Day Ten! We made it! Today’s prompt: Winter Dreams. What do you dream about for winter? Is it crisp, cold nights with ink black skies holding twinkling stars? Is it snow covered trees swaying in the gentle night breeze? Is it cozy nights by the fire, sipping hot cocoa or wine? Is it bustling streets with honking cars and people talking and laughing? What are your winter dreams? In some ways my winter dreams have come true with a rare, early snowfall in my neck of the woods. Waking up to snow is still magical! For a few minutes I feel exactly as I did when I was ten, fifteen…

    10DCAC Day 8

Today’s prompt: Autumn Looks Like… In the northern hemisphere we’ve just moved from fall to winter. While winter is beginning to sparkle, the memory of fall colors lingers in the air with leaves still falling and faded colors of orange, yellow and brown carpeting the ground. What does autumn look like in your home? Do you have the changing seasons? Do you have white capped mountains or lush green palms marking fall days? Capture it in your imagination and then create it! We’ve transitioned from pumpkin spice to peppermint mocha and we take time to mark the changes. We’re in the home stretch of the challenge today which is sometimes…

    Day 7 10DCAC

Today’s prompt from Tami Chacon with Choose Joy Studio is “All that Glitters is Not Gold.” I love the question that Tami included in FB today. “What brings warmth and sparkle to your life?” My response to this prompt has me scratching my head a little bit. Not sure why she decided to come through, but there she is in all her glittery, sparkly glory. Do you have those moments where you sit down to create with one idea in mind and something else entirely different shows up? This morning was one of those times for me. I read the prompt, picked the colors and thought it would be a…

    10DCAC Day 6

Day Six Prompt: Time for Trees! What shapes do you see when you think of trees? Draw it. Photograph it. Collage it. Show us your trees! This prompt comes from a year of looking at trees and thinking about how different they are throughout the year and in different places. I live in Raleigh, the City of Oaks, and as you can imagine we have lots of trees. The summer is dappled with green leaves and glorious shade in the steamy hot days. The fall is multi-colored with oranges, scarlet and yellows dotted with every brown you can imagine. The winter seems more grey with the stark outlines of the…

    Day 5 10DCAC

If you’re following the prompts today, you’ll know why I have Julie Andrews singing in my head. It’s day five and “A Few of My Favorite Things” is the prompt. I’ve had the soundtrack from The Sound of Music going in my head all morning! (Did I just admit something weird, or do other people have a constant soundtrack running through their head each day?) Tami and I are having so much fun with the prompts and we hope you are too! (Go check out her website.) It’s been inspiring to see your work AND I keep reminding people who haven’t started yet that it’s not too late. It’s really…

    10DCAC Day 4

Day 4: Create with Music! Put on your favorite music and sing out loud while you create. If you need to be a little more quiet throw in your earbuds and listen while you work. If you can’t do that, write down key words from the song. Here’s my process. I sit in front of my table, turn on the music and close my eyes while the song washes over me. Then I repeat the song, open my eyes and begin to write or paint depending on the song. OK, I’ll even admit that there might be dancing around the studio while I’m throwing paint on the canvas or the…
