Dog Days of Summer

Does anyone say that anymore? If you’ve heard it, does it feel like we say it later in the summer than we used to?

It’s that time of year when I mourn the end of summer and the waning daylight. In the western hemisphere, daylight hours have been slowly decreasing. Have you noticed? It’s a gradual change, just like being in the proverbial boiling pot. We don’t realize until, “Wow, it’s 8pm and it’s already dark!” I miss the light.

What does this have to do with art? This prompt came from the often repeated phrase used to describe those sweltering hot August/September days during my childhood. And…I was trying to decide if I wanted to choose the literal or figurative meaning for today’s art.

As you can see, I chose to go with dogs. It’s the natural choice because I’m working on illustrations for my children’s book about Beamer. It’s due to come out in October. I’ll share more illustrations of the other characters as we get closer to October. Maybe I’ll spend more time in the studio today and work on another piece.

In the meantime; endless, hot summer weather or cute, silly pup. Which will you choose?
