“If wishes were horses beggars would ride.”
Can’t tell you how many times I heard that quote growing up. A quick research session attributes the quote most commonly to a nursery rhyme from the 1840’s
If wishes were horses,
Beggars would ride:
If turnips were watches
I would wear one by my side.
And if if’s and an’s were pots and pans,
the tinker would never work.English Nursery Rhymes Collection, 1840

I thought we could end with something really juicy and full of many possibilities and interpretations.
